The Other Side of Mother's Day

As Mother's Day approaches, I am sharing a post written by Carla Cook at Graceless. Cook shares about her experiences of realizing her mother's shortcomings in being a parent and ending the relationship.

The journey in this post is faced by many people in our culture, and it is a common focus of work for my clients. Even after grappling with how to set boundaries, accept deficits, or cut off entirely, the relationship with what Cook refers to as an "unloving mother" is never truly over. Mother's Day can be a reminder of the grief about this lack of relationship, especially as the images of Hallmark cards and tributes to loving mothers roll in across social media. . I share this post for those who are facing their own grief this week, as a reminder that they are not alone.
